On the basis of European law, the Federal Republic of Germany is interconnected with many states in the European Union on matter of social security. European law brings the various national pension systems of the Member States into alignment with one another.
The Federal Republic of Germany has concluded bilateral agreements on social security with a series of other states. These agreements primarily regulate the right to claim pension entitlements and the payment of pensions in a particular state.
Certain periods spent abroad count towards the entitlement to a German pension. If you are resident in another Member State or Contracting State, you may submit your application for a German pension with the insurance agency of that particular state and still be sure the application is made within the prescribed periods. The computation of the pension is governed by the principle that each of the Member States or Contracting States pays out in respect of the periods pertaining to it and according to its statutory provisions.
Information about if, and to what amount, your German pension can be paid to you if you are resident abroad.
You are obligated to inform us in the event that you relocate your place of residence (domicile) to another state. If possible, you should inform us two months in advance before relocating, in order to ensure that your payments are not delayed.
As liaison offices “Deutsche Rentenversicherung” (institutions of the statutory German pension scheme) serve as points of contact for insured persons who have completed insurance periods abroad or who live there.
