A solid scientific foundation of reform measures is essential for a target-orientated pension policy. Therefore, it is the utmost concern of the Research Network of the Statutory Pension Scheme (“Forschungsnetzwerk Alterssicherung, FNA”) that was established nearly ten years ago, to prepare political decisions in application-oriented projects, and make them comprehensible. Thus, research promoted by the Research Network of the Statutory Pension Scheme generates an “additional value” for the statutory pension scheme in Germany. At the same time, it requires a per-manent adjustment of the focus of research to the relevant questions in the field of pensions. Currently, the following items are on the agenda: questions regarding the transition period between employment termination and retirement, future risks of old-age poverty, earning incapacity, and interrelation between the three tiers of pension provision.
